Sessions

Our sessions relate to the following Principles of the EYLF

1. Secure, respectful and reciprocal relationships

Children will be working in small groups and will practice working together to explore different topics

2. Partnerships

We will work in partnership with educators to design a program that suits their class. Our program has been designed to allow collaboration between the teacher and us to ensure a personalised and tailored session.

3. High expectations and equity

We believe all children have the ability to be scientists, in fact we believe all children ARE scientists. We aim to teach the children at our sessions that they are scientists with the ability to explore and learn.

Our sessions relate to the following practices of the EYLF

Holistic approaches

Our sessions are structured to give the children a mix of verbal information along along with hands on interaction. We take scientific principles and theories and connect them to real world examples for the children.

Responsiveness to children

Our activities are flexible and can be responsive to children's questions. Most activities are set up to allow children to explore different queries they may have.

Learning through play

We strongly believe in learning through doing - after all that's what scientists do! Our activities are designed to be fun and allow children to explore different ideas through hands on activities.

Intentional teaching

Although to the children our activities may seem like lots of fun each and every one is carefully thought out to ensure that they are allowing children to learn new scientific facts, learn about being scientists in general and also about scientific methods.

Our sessions relate to the following outcomes of the EYLF

OUTCOME 1: CHILDREN HAVE A STRONG SENSE OF IDENTITY

• Children develop their emerging autonomy, inter-dependence, resilience and sense of agency

  • Children will be encouraged to try be open to new ideas and to challenge themselves. They will take risks in decision making as they make predictions about the results of our experiments

• Children develop knowledgeable and confident self identities

  • We will aim for children to develop a self identity as a scientist. We aim to ensure that all children will believe it is an option to take on scientist roles professionally or simply continue to be a scientist by exploring the world.

• Children learn to interact in relation to others with care, empathy and respect

  • Children will be working in small groups and will need to work together to achieve some of the activities.

OUTCOME 2: CHILDREN ARE CONNECTED WITH AND CONTRIBUTE TO THEIR WORLD

• Children develop a sense of belonging to groups and communities and an understanding of the reciprocal rights and responsibilities necessary for active community participation

  • Through our activities children will broaden their understanding of the world and the role they can play within in it as scientists. â€‹

• Children become socially responsible and show respect for the environment

  • Children will explore relationships with on-living things and observe, notice and respond to change

OUTCOME 4: CHILDREN ARE CONFIDENT AND INVOLVED LEARNERS

Children develop dispositions for learning such as curiosity, cooperation, confidence, creativity, commitment, enthusiasm, persistence, imagination and reflexivity

  • Children will be amazed with what they get to explore during the session.

  • They will be able to participate in meaningful inquiry based experiences.

  • They will be able to use play to investigate and explore ideas.

• Children develop a range of skills and processes such as problem solving, enquiry, experimentation, hypothesising, researching and investigating

  • Children will learn to make predictions and record results

  • Children will be able to manipulate objects and experiment with cause and effect and trial and error

  • Children will be able to use reflective thinking to consider why things happen and what can be learnt from these experiences

OUTCOME 5: CHILDREN ARE EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATORS

• Children interact verbally and non-verbally with others for a range of purposes

  • Children will be encouraged to interact during the activities by predicting outcomes and discussing the results of our activities. â€‹

• Children engage with a range of texts and gain meaning from these texts

  • Children will be encouraged to record the results of some of their experiments either as a group or individually.
